Disability spaces.
I n a recent letter to a national newspaper I read "After parking in a disability space, two young ladies, after ensuring that their disability badge was duly displayed in the windscreen, hurried off, in their high heel shoes to commence their shopping".
A few days later, on the letters page was a reply from another writer. "I am also disabled and my disablement would not be evident to onlookers, don't make judgements without knowing the facts".
Two points of view, and, each has a point to make.
Yes, of course, the first letter writer is right, we, those lucky enough not to have a disability, sit and wait in our cars for someone to vacate a space, and, if we are lucky, take that space before someone else nips in to it, and, I wonder, how many fights that has caused, whilst we are waiting, to see others driving directly in to a disabled space, hurrying in to the shop, and then, returning with their shopping and driving away is frustrating.
Yes, of course, the second letter writer is also right, they have a disabled badge, therefore, they use a disabled space, and the writer is right, we, the onlookers, don't know what that disability may be.
May I propose, "it would be more sensible to re-name these spaces, immobility spaces".
These spaces, that of course, are closest to the premises that they serve, are, in my opinion, there for the immobile. often they are wide spaces to permit the transfer of the "disabled person" to a wheel chair, or, to give easier access for the immobile person.
It is my opinion that, those who have a disability, and, rightly, have a disabled badge from which they can prove their disability to claim services that they need, should, if mobile, and, understanding the requirements of certain disablements, join us and leave these spaces for the immobile.
Please vote YES or NO. Question. Should disbled spaces be re-named immobility spaces?.
