Frankie Laine. Goodbye to one of the greats.
On tuesday the 6th of february, 2007, we said goodbye to one of the greats of show business.
Frankie Laine, at the age of 93, has probably gone to join those that he sang about with lyrics such as, "I Believe", "Answer Me", "My Friend", "Rain, Rain, Rain", and, "There Must Be A Reason", that all contain a message that must relate to his beliefs.
Repoprts say that Frankie was still performing at the age of 92, and, his most recent work, over the last few years was for charities that were close to his heart.
Frankie's first hit record was in 1947, "Thats My Desire". I was not buying records at that time, and they were records, 78rpm, 10inch, and, black something, that is, B.V., before vinyl, but, my older sister bought them, and I was hooked on the voice of, Frankie Laine.
The travelling fun fair visited my home town on a regular basis, and, my memory easily slips back to the ride on the "bumper cars", accompanied by the voice of Frankie singing, "Your Cheating Heart", "Rock of Gibralta", "Hey Joe", and "Jezebel", and, even the very bad sound system of that era could not take away the absolutely, spine tingling, booming, voice.
Even now, some 55 years later, and although I do not particulaly connect them with any event, the sound of his voice, singing, "I Believe" or "Answer Me", bring tears to my eyes.
Probably the best C.D. that those interested could buy, to hear fine examples of his talent, would be, "Frankie Laine, The Original Recordings", on, Columbia 485124 9. 26 tracks of sheer magic.
Goodbye Frankie, and thanks.
